Odds makers, the world’s financial markets and the experts were certain Britain would vote to remain in the European Union. The “markets” were up for days before the big “Brexit” vote. When the votes were counted all the prognosticators were wrong! The vote wasn’t even close. Few people could read the tea leaves of discontent brewing in the heart of so many Brits. This event is one of a long string of history-making events that have rocked history and caught all of us unaware:
Sunday December, 7, 1941; the day Japan bombed the sleepy naval base on Pearl Harbor. Because we were unprepared our country entered WW II with a decimated naval force. By God’s grace and the grit of millions of Americans we were victorious.
With the end of WWII, we missed the start of the Cold War, as a menacing Soviet bear gobbled up Eastern Europe sealing it for decades in what Sir Winston Churchill labelled as “The Iron Curtain”.
We missed the fall of the Soviet Union symbolized by the taking down of the Berlin Wall. Thinking the Soviets dead, we missed the rise of the new Russia under Russian president Vladimir Putin whose vision is the re-birth of the former Russian Empire.
As we focused on Russia becoming a player in the 21st Century we missed the big story as the Middle East invaded our daily life on September 11, 2001.
This short history lesson is a warning! We are closer to missing the biggest event in history since the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ! The event is the soon appearance of Jesus it the air to call his church both dead and alive home to Heaven. This “homecoming” will leave the Earth absent of God’s Holy Spirit, the very Spirit that has restrained the planet’s inhabitants from total annihilation: morally, spiritually and physically. What follows is a seven year period of unprecedented oppression, wars and death!
Paul writes in I Thessalonians 4: 13-18 (KJV) the believing community of faith will not go through that Tribulation. If you have not put your faith and trust in Christ, now is the time as the days grow short.
Trust Christ today. Don’t be left behind. Don’t be one of those who when it’s too late will say “we didn’t see it coming.”
