Look at your hands, what do you see?  What don’t you see? The human hand has three main nerves, two major arteries, and 27 different bones.  More of the body is devoted to controlling the hands than any other part of the body.  Your fingers work by “remote control.”  There are no muscles in fingers – the muscles which bend your fingers are in the palm of your hand and in the forearm.  They are connected to the fingers by tendons which pull on and move them like the strings of a marionette.  While they are engineering marvels, they are also tools of human expressions:

  • We clap our hands in joy.
  • We raise our fists in anger.
  • We raise our hands as a vote of approval or disapproval.
  • We raise our hands to surrender.
  • Hands are used to comfort and caress.
  • Hands are used to hold weapons that can take a life.
  • The carpenter uses his hands to build a house.
  • But it takes a mother’s and father’s hands to make a home.
  • Hands open and shut doors.

There are over 2,000 references to hands in the Bible.  Some give us valuable insights into the nature of God and ourselves.  Hebrews 1:10 (Authorized King James Version) “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:”.

I Peter 5:6,7 says it’s this same mighty hand of God that lovingly cares for you and holds you safely, come what may.  Jesus says in John 10:27-30 that He will not permit our salvation to be taken away “… no man can pluck them out of my hand… no man is able to take them out of my Father’s hands.  I and the father are one.”

Picture this, you are safe in Jesus’ hand and God’s hand is clasped over His – you have double coverage securing your salvation!

Ezra 8:22b states, “The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him;”

Psalm 31:15 says, “My times are in thy hand.” Times of joy, tears, disappointment, despair, fear or loneliness.

The apostle Paul defines the gospel in I Corinthians 15:1-4:

  • Chris died for our sins.
  • He was buried.
  • He rose from the dead in three days.
  • He lives today.

Hands animate the gospel account.

  • Luke 24:7 “…The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men.”
  • Luke 23:46 (In death Jesus said) “… into thy hands I commend my spirit.”
  • Hands took Him down from the cross.
  • Hands prepare His body for burial.
  • Hands rolled a stone in front of Jesus’ tomb.
  • The apostle Thomas’ doubts were dispelled as he looked at Jesus’ nailed-pierced hands.
  • As Jesus ascends into heaven, He raises those same hands to bless His disciples.
  • Galatians 2:9 says we extend the right hand of fellowship to one another.

We have been created with two hands – one to help ourselves and one to help others – you are in good hands with Jesus (author unknown). Amen!
